FAQS

New to microcement? Learn what it is, where it works and how to apply it before you buy.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a cement based coating applied by hand in thin layers, usually two to three millimetres once the full system is built up. It goes over the surface you already have. Tiles, concrete, screed, render and plasterboard can all be coated, which means no demolition and no waste going to landfill.

Because it is trowelled on rather than laid, there are no grout lines and no joins. You get one continuous surface that can run from the floor up the wall and into the shower, and it can be used on bench tops, stairs and furniture as well.

The finish is mineral and matte, with subtle movement left by the trowel. No two applications look identical, which is the appeal. Once sealed correctly it handles wet areas, foot traffic and cleaning products.

Microcement is a system rather than a single product. Primer, base coats, finish coats and sealer all work together, and the substrate has to be sound and properly prepared before anything goes on it. That preparation stage is where most failed jobs start.

What is the difference between Microcement and Venetian plaster?

The short answer is what they are made from and what they are built to survive. Microcement is cement based and made to be walked on. Venetian plaster is lime based and made to be looked at.

Can Microcement go over existing tiles?

Yes, and it's one of its biggest advantages. It bonds straight over tiles, concrete, plasterboard, timber, hebel and most solid substrates with no demolition. The prep just needs to be done properly.

Is Microcement waterproof?

It's waterproof once sealed with the correct sealer, which makes it suitable for bathrooms, showers and wet areas. The sealer choice matters, so ask us if you're unsure.

Can I use Microcement around a pool?

No. Microcement isn't suitable for swimming pools because chlorine breaks down the sealer over time. It's fine for most other outdoor surfaces with the right UV-stable sealer.

How many colours are available?

The Decora Diamond system comes in 63 colours through the tinting system. Some carry a tinting surcharge, which is shown when you select the colour. We can also post you a colour card.

How much do I need?

Coverage is roughly 0.6 to 0.7kg per square metre per coat, and you'll usually apply two coats. Use the coverage calculator above, or send us your measurements.

Is it slip rated for commercial work?

Microcement can be finished with an anti-slip seal. Slip resistance depends on the sealer and finish specified, so contact us with your project requirements and we'll spec the right system and supply the documentation.

What's the lead time?
